Brick trowels and concreting tools might be set to work at nearly three-quarters of the UK's homes, according to research by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Shelter, a charity that offers help to those living in poor housing conditions.

The survey indicated that 74 per cent of homeowners aim to improve their property in order to create their dream home rather than to improve its value on the market.

Kitchen extensions were at the top of the list for home improvement plans with conservatories and attic conversions not far behind. All together, 73 per cent of homeowners dream of improving their abode.

The survey was carried out as part of the Architect in the House project set up by RIBA and Shelter to raise money for those in need of adequate housing by offering homeowners an hour of consultation with an architect for a suggested donation of £40 to the charity.
