A boost in the number of people taking on work in the construction sector in Scotland has been largely responsible for employment rates rising in the country.

This is according to Grahame Smith, general-secretary for the Scottish Trades Union Congress, who said the news was welcome.

While he described the growth in the industry as "strong", he said it is unlikely this performance could carry employment figures for the foreseeable future.

According to Mr Smith, potential weaknesses in the housing market, seasonal trends in building and public sector cuts could all have an adverse effect.

He said: "It is not too late for the Chancellor to reconsider the austerity measures announced in the Budget."

The figures showed the number of people in jobs jumped by 0.8 per cent in the three months to July 2010.

Enterprise minister Jim Mather, discussing the data, said Scotland is currently creating lots of vacancies for those who are out of work.
