Users of concrete tools in Kilwinning, Ayrshire have been awarded a £2.2 million contract to build two residential units.

Barr Construction has been commissioned by the local authority to construct the structures, which will be facilities dedicated to housing young people who are unable to live with their families for a wide range of reasons.

"We are pleased to have secured the contracts for these residential facilities and are looking forward to creating two first-class facilities for North Ayrshire Council," Paul Griffen, divisional director of the firm, commented.

Work is scheduled to be completed on both buildings by early 2011 and green technologies such as solar panels, sun pipes and under-floor heating will be used, the company announced.

Recently, Barr Construction won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects for eight buildings in Scotland, including some in Glasgow.

The company has grown from a late nineteenth century business - W & J Barr & Sons - which was a local building and joining firm.
