Users of concrete tools should be building more houses, one expert has said, suggesting government schemes could actually reduce the construction of abodes.

Director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders Brian Berry argued plans to give communities control over the creation of homes in their region may lead to a greater shortfall in available property.

"A lot of people don't want new housing developments in their local area," the specialist asserted, stating his concern that financial incentives for people to allow abodes to be built may not be enough.

Government spending and difficulty finding mortgages also spell trouble for the industry, he noted, explaining less than half of the property that must be constructed each year is being delivered at the moment.

However, in a recent statement, Mr Berry described the government's move to give more money to councils to help resolve the housing shortage as "very encouraging".
