New proposals could see more work for users of brick tools, as the Home Builders Federation (HBF) described government plans as a "welcome step".

The New Homes Bonus, according to housing minister Grant Shapps who recently announced the policy idea, aims to help alleviate the housing shortage.

It would see councils given incentives for the development of abodes in their area, the politician explained.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the HBF, said that the announcement was "welcome" but more details are needed as to how the scheme will work.

"It is imperative that the government provides local authorities with full and complete proposals as soon as possible," he stated, adding that increased house building may not meet targets unless councils are told how the programme is going to work and when it would begin

According to Mr Shapps, the New Homes Bonus would be introduced during the Spending Review period and the rewards granted to well-performing boroughs could be used on any local need, from council tax discounts to playgrounds.
