As the Green Deal sees concrete tools put to work in retrofitting properties nationwide for improved energy efficiency, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) warns that focus must be given to making sure competent professionals carry out the work.

Director of external affairs Brian Berry says: "It is important that those charged with carrying out the energy efficiency improvement work are recognised as competent in order to safeguard householders as well as reputable builders."

However, he adds that significant opportunities could arise from the Green Deal, with new-builds equalling less than one per cent of the UK's total housing stock each year.

With 26 million existing homes potentially in need of upgrades, concrete tools nationwide could be kept busy in the hands of their professional owners.

The FMB notes how concrete can help to contribute towards sustainability in construction, through eco-friendly initiatives such as making greater use of recycled aggregates.
