Users of brick tools have seen the biggest construction firms grow, while smaller ones are less fortunate, it has been found.

The Construction Index 100 Top Construction Companies 2010 found Balfour Beatty made 15 per cent of the total revenue earned by the best-performing 100 companies in the industry.

However, overall earnings shrank in the sector, with the aggregate turnover of the listed firms down 1.4 per cent on last year at £68.4 billion.

Despite this, not all businesses made losses, with Balfour Beatty and five of its peers in the top ten companies increasing turnover.

Elsewhere, Willmott Dixon was just £1 million away from becoming a £1 billion enterprise.

Additionally, Mitie entered the top ten with a growth of 13 per cent in its turnover, at £1.72 billion.

Balfour Beatty recently won a £250 million contract to carry out work on the N17 and N18 Gort to Tuam roads in Ireland.
