Bricklaying tools and concrete trowels will be in high demand in 2010 as the Scottish Government sets aside £76 million for civil engineering and construction work.

Following on from the announcement last month that more than 7,000 affordable homes are planned for Scotland in 2010, the cabinet has agreed on the allocation of public funds.

Affordable housing developments have been allotted the largest proportion of the funds at £31 million. Other initiatives earmarked for financial support include road improvements, projects in Dundee and the Forth Valley, and the creation of a renewable energy infrastructure support scheme.

Finance secretary John Swinney said: "The Scottish Government has moved swiftly to allocate these resources to ensure they make the maximum possible contribution to Scotland's economic recovery and to support employment, particularly in the construction industry."

Over the next three years, a record £1.71 billion will be invested in social housing in Scotland, seeing the approval of 21,500 homes.
