Building companies could need to invest in more concrete finishing equipment and bricklaying tools after plans to boost the number of apprenticeships in the sector were unveiled.

ConstructionSkills and the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) are offering firms financial incentives to add an apprentice who has lost their previous job because of the recession to their workforce.

Simon Waugh, chief executive of the NAS, said there is a wealth of evidence to show that employing apprentices is good for business.

He has therefore urged employers in the construction industry to consider taking up this offer.

"The construction industry in London has been hit hard in this recession, which is why we are offering this £1,000 incentive to employers," Mr Waugh commented.

Apprentices can have experience in a number of areas, such as using bricklaying tools, concrete rakes, trowels and floor saws.

Paul Newitt of ConstructionSkills London added that apprentices offer "significant value" to a business with their hard work, determination and enthusiasm.

The new additions to the workforce could prove useful after the government announced it is stepping up its plans to create new council housing across the UK.
