Brick tools users may be encouraged to hear that one expert has claimed the construction industry is showing signs of recovery.

Simon Rubinsohn, chief economist at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics), said recent data has been promising.

The Department of Communities and Local Government revealed housebuilding starts jumped 13 per cent in the three-month period ending March 2010 when compared with the previous quarter.

Mr Rubinsohn stated the number of new builds over the next year is likely to total approximately 120,000.

He remarked: "The rebound in housing starts is consistent with the better tone evident in the latest Rics Construction Survey."

Building has been boosted by a strengthening in private sector output, the specialist explained, with housing associations producing a steady stream of properties.

However, he admitted poor mortgage finance availability and restricted development funding is holding the industry back from the highs it experienced in previous decades.
